1745 Sukenobu Shunga Woodblock Print Book Vol 2 - Heaven & Hell - odd scenes
Authentic Edo period original, c.1745, Japanese shunga erotic art woodblock print picture book by Nishikawa Sukenobu (1671-1750). Volume two (of three) from the shunga series, Shikido Sanzegawa. Shikido translates to one's sexsual way and Sanzegawa is a river name which all dead people must cross towards heaven/hell. Similar to the River Styx in Greek mythology. Shunga picture book measures 16 cm x 22.2 cm closed. Very good impressions and fair+ condition with some cover wear and wear and soiling inside the book, including a fair amount of wormage. However, it's firmly intact and can be perused easily without worry of any harm to the book. Still has its original cover and only binding string has been replaced. No backing for the pages. All photos shown here with remaining pages being kanji text pages. Please see and judge from photos.
An extremely rare book with an extraordinary story where our protagonist seems to be struggling in some kind of sexual hell/purgatory. In this second volume he spends much of his time at sea/seaside, under better circumstances for the most part (aside from the tortuous penis-pulling scene), where he has numerous sexual encounters with a sea enchantress/goddess. Great artwork, great scenes, a fantastic original Japanese shunga ehon from the 1700s!
