c.1775 Tsukioka Settei Nanshoku (homoerotic) Shunga Woodblock Print
Original Edo-Period Homoerotic Scene – Monk & Wakashu
A genuine original Edo-period shunga woodblock print by Tsukioka Settei (1710–1786), dating to c.1775.
Settei is regarded as one of the refined masters of early ukiyo-e book illustration, celebrated for his elegant linework, flowing compositions, and quietly sophisticated erotic imagery. Works of this period are increasingly difficult to locate individually on the market, particularly authentic nanshoku (male-male love) scenes such as this example.
Condition is very good for its age with strong, clear impressions. Some minor wear, soiling, bit of wormage, and a few pinholes. No backing. Please see and judge from the photos provided.
Dimensions:
19.8 cm x 15.8 cm
This intimate composition depicts a Buddhist monk together with a youthful wakashu companion, rendered in Settei’s distinctive restrained yet highly sensual style. The scene carries the quiet atmosphere and refined eroticism characteristic of late Edo-period nanshoku imagery, offering a rare glimpse into an important but less commonly encountered aspect of Japanese shunga culture.
