c.1775 Tsukioka Settei Nanshoku (homoerotic) Shunga Woodblock Print
Original Edo-Period Japan Homoerotic Scene
A genuine original Edo-period shunga woodblock print by Tsukioka Settei (1710–1786), dating to c.1775.
Settei is regarded as one of the refined masters of early ukiyo-e book illustration, celebrated for his elegant linework, flowing compositions, and quietly sophisticated erotic imagery. Works of this period are increasingly difficult to locate individually on the market, particularly authentic nanshoku (male-male love) scenes such as this example.
Condition is very good for its age with strong, clear impressions. Some minor wear, soiling, slight wormage, and a few pinholes. No backing. Please see and judge from the photos provided.
Dimensions:
19.8 cm x 15.8 cm
This intimate composition depicts a youthful male companion fully engaged in the embrace of his older lover, creating a scene that conveys mutual desire and emotional immediacy rather than domination alone. Settei’s restrained yet expressive linework softens the erotic subject matter, while the close interior setting and intertwined figures give the image a surprisingly natural and human atmosphere. The result is a refined example of Edo-period nanshoku imagery that balances sensuality with subtle emotional nuance.
