c.1775 Tsukioka Settei Nanshoku (homoerotic) Shunga Woodblock Print
Original Edo-Period Japan Homoerotic Scene - Chinese Male & Companion

A genuine original Edo-period shunga woodblock print by Tsukioka Settei (1710–1786), dating to c.1775.

Settei is regarded as one of the refined masters of early ukiyo-e book illustration, celebrated for his elegant linework, flowing compositions, and quietly sophisticated erotic imagery.  Works of this period are increasingly difficult to locate individually on the market, particularly authentic nanshoku (male-male love) scenes such as this example.

Condition is very good for its age with strong, clear impressions.  Some minor wear, soiling, slight wormage, and a few pinholes.  No backing.  Please see and judge from the photos provided.

Dimensions:
19.8 cm x 15.8 cm

This unusual and visually striking composition depicts an older foreign gentleman — a Chinese figure, suggested by the distinctive facial hair as well as hair styling — together with a youthful male companion in an intimate interior setting.  Such depictions are comparatively uncommon within Edo-period shunga and add an additional layer of cultural curiosity to the work.  Settei’s elegant handling of line and form tempers the explicit subject matter, resulting in a scene that feels refined, atmospheric, and quietly sensual rather than overtly theatrical.
