Original Edo-Period Japan Homoerotic Scene - Onnagata (a male kabuki actor specializing in female roles
A genuine original Edo-period shunga woodblock print by Tsukioka Settei (1710–1786), dating to c.1775.
Settei is regarded as one of the refined masters of early ukiyo-e book illustration, celebrated for his elegant linework, flowing compositions, and quietly sophisticated erotic imagery. Works of this period are increasingly difficult to locate individually on the market, particularly authentic nanshoku (male-male love) scenes such as this example.

This elegant composition depicts an onnagata — a male kabuki actor specializing in female roles — together with his male companion in a refined intimate setting. The actor’s stylized hairstyle, delicate features, and graceful robes contrast beautifully with the quiet sensuality of the scene, reflecting the close historical relationship between kabuki culture and Edo-period nanshoku aesthetics. Settei’s restrained yet expressive linework gives the image a remarkably sophisticated atmosphere, balancing eroticism with theatrical beauty and emotional intimacy.
