1830 - Shunga Surimono - Subtle Fingering
Authentic Edo period original, c.1830, Japanese erotic art shunga surimono (privately commissioned, high-quality print) woodblock print picture by an artist of the UTAGAWA School.
Shunga picture measures 9 cm x 13 cm. Very good colors and impressions. Nice embossing, as well as some deluxe printing techniques such as mica (metallic pigments) and gauffrage (a milder and more subtle type of embossing).
Very good condition with some light wear and soiling. No backing, aside from minimal strips along the sides of the picture. Please see and judge from photos.
A beautiful and unusually subtle Edo-period shunga scene featuring an elegantly dressed courtesan seated beside her lover as they share an intimate moment. Her elaborate coiffure and richly patterned floral robes immediately command attention, while the large bronze brazier and surrounding accoutrements create a wonderfully detailed domestic setting. The erotic element is discreetly incorporated into the composition, rewarding a closer look.
