1830 - Shunga Surimono - Under the Robes
Authentic Edo period original, c.1830, Japanese erotic art shunga surimono (privately commissioned, high-quality print) woodblock print picture by an artist of the UTAGAWA School.
Shunga picture measures 9 cm x 13 cm. Very good colors and impressions. Nice embossing, as well as some deluxe printing techniques such as mica (metallic pigments) and gauffrage (a milder and more subtle type of embossing).
Good condition with some light wear, wormage, and soiling. No backing, aside from minimal strips along the sides of the picture. Please see and judge from photos.
A wonderfully discreet Edo-period shunga scene depicting an elegantly dressed Japanese beauty nestled closely against her lover. At first glance the pair appear simply locked in an affectionate embrace, while their intimate encounter remains largely concealed beneath layers of richly patterned robes. The brilliant reds and blues and her graceful coiffure give the composition an especially refined and decorative quality.
