Few samurai prints command attention quite like this one. Kuniyoshi cloaked his hero in a magnificent suit of metallic-black armor, creating an image of unusual power, drama, and visual weight. Such heavily black-armored warrior designs are uncommon within ukiyo-e, and surviving examples retaining this dramatic metallic effect are especially desirable among collectors. Combined with the dynamic pose, flashing sword, and waterfall backdrop, the result is a warrior print that feels every bit as imposing today as it did when first published in 1853.
A superb example of Kuniyoshi's genius for heroic design and one of the most visually commanding warrior prints we have handled.
